Finding the best options for storage in your laundry
October 17th, 2011When renovating your laundry, planning for your storage needs should be one of your first considerations. The laundry needs to be a functional space that is user-friendly, with enough room for you to carry out all your washing, drying, clothes sorting, cleaning and ironing activities. Often the laundry runs the risk of turning into a messy room, or a "dumping zone" where more and more clutter accumulates. However, with a bit of careful planning and a clever cabinet-maker, you can turn your laundry into an easy, efficient, and dare we say even enjoyable place to be.
Before you begin, take an inventory of everything in your laundry so you can plan accurately for your space needs. Take special notice of anything that doesn't have a "home" such as cleaning products, powders, coat-hangers or baskets. Then it's time to think about You can order standard laundry cabinet packages from a cabinet manufacturer. Or if you prefer to have more control over the style, dimensions and arrangement of your cabinets, and your budget allows you to do so, plan out your laundry with a designer and go for custom-built cabinets.
Depending on your individual storage needs, you can plan your cabinets to include a combination of open and closed shelving, drawers, cupboards, and a fold-out ironing board. Cubby shelves are useful for over-filled laundry baskets or products you use very regularly - simply slide things in and pull them out when in use. Base-cabinet with pull-out hampers or bins are also a great way to get dirty laundry off the floor and out of sight, while still being readily accessible.
Do you need space to fold washing? Base cabinets will give you counter-top space where you can sort and fold laundry. Just make sure your work surfaces are durable enough to withstand everyday use without getting scratched or damaged. Having overhead cupboards as well can help to create more floor space. However, if you have a top-loading washer or dryer, make sure you place overhead cupboards high enough so that you can still open and close your appliances easily.
If you're on a tight budget, you can pick up simple yet stylish boxes, baskets or hanging shelves from Ikea and use these to store clothes, detergent, washing powder, cleaning products or pegs.
