How to create an efficient combined bathroom and laundry
June 27th, 2011Combining your bathroom and laundry may seem like an odd idea, but it makes a lot of sense for some homes or units. Laundry appliances can be attached to the same water supply as your bathroom, and positioning your laundry closer to the areas where dirty clothes accumulate (the bathroom and the bedroom) can save you lots of running around when it comes to washing day. Combining your bathroom and laundry can also save you loads of space, but it will only be worthwhile if you ensure the work area is functional. Below are our top tips to create an efficient combined bathroom and laundry.
Choose stackable appliances
Trading your top-loading laundry appliances for a stacked washer and dryer unit
will help you save on floor space, water usage and energy. Just
remember that a stacked unit will have a smaller capacity.
Leave room for storage
Make sure you leave plenty of room for overhead storage. You'll need shelves or cupboards to store all your laundry supplies, washing baskets, ironing equipment, and so on. A good cabinet-maker will be able to design a cupboard arrangement to suit you.Hide your laundry area
It's possible to shield your laundry area by screening it from the rest of the bathroom with a sliding door or a bifold door. That way, unless the doors are left open, the room will simply appear like a regular bathroom.Install a rail
Installing a rail above your laundry sink will allow you to hang items that are not able to go through the tumble drier so that they can air-dry.Plan for your electric needs
Make sure you have enough power points for all your laundry appliances as well as your regular bathroom appliances. If your combined bathroom and laundry room lacks a window, consider installing a fan to eliminate moisture whenever your clothes dryer is running. With some careful planning, clever use of space, and a few tips and tricks, it is possible to create a combined bathroom and laundry that is efficient, functional, and attractive.
