How to hide your fridge and dishwasher

Renovating your kitchen is never a small task, and it might seem like there are a thousand things to consider when creating your design. However, one thing you may want to consider adding to your list is a hidden fridge and dishwasher. Why? Disguising your fridge and dishwasher as cabinets can create a smooth, minimalist look, and hiding these large and unsightly appliances can allow you to draw focus to more attractive or important elements in the room. In addition to this, camouflaging the plastic or stainless steel surfaces of your fridge and dishwasher doors and replacing them with wood will warm up the room considerably, giving you that cosy kitchen vibe.

To hide your fridge and dishwasher, you'll need two things: a good cabinet maker and panel-ready appliances. A custom-built counter will house your dishwasher, while a recess will be added to house the fridge using materials that blend in with the design of your kitchen. Both cabinet doors will still open and close normally and look like ordinary cabinet doors, but they will hide a fully-functioning fridge and dishwasher.

If your budget has enough room, pick up a fully-integrated dishwasher for yourself; this is a dishwasher designed so that a single door opens from top to bottom and there are no buttons or controls on the front. This means that a panel can be attached to the front and you can still access the controls from inside the dishwasher or on top of the door. If your dishwasher is only semi-integrated, you can attach a panel to the front while leaving a gap towards the top for the controls. This will not look as seamless as a fully-integrated dishwasher, but can still go a long way towards hiding the appliance and giving the room a more vintage feel.
