Kitchen renovation design: Glass Splashbacks

If you are anything like me you find yourself daydreaming of that apartment or house… with the water views… beautiful kitchen… and a lot of zeros that you are, frankly, unable to conceive of. Daydreaming aside, one of the main touches seen in the higher end that appears to detract so much from “your” kitchen is something as simple as splashbacks.

First Question: What is a splashback?

Answer: A surface that provides protection agains splashes, as behind a sink.

With that very fundamental question out of the way, we go towards why glass splashbacks?

Answer:
  1. No Grout ! = no grease, no mould, no grime
  2. Easily cleaned
  3. As indicated above… It looks amazing

The range of colours and styles available to you is virtually limitless allowing you to create something timeless or spectacularly transient (read retro chic in a few years). And for those renovating the whole kitchen this allows for seamless integration with the style you have in mind. You may even choose some mood lighting for your splashback! And the best thing, with grout gone… it retains its appearance! No more encroaching filthy gray/black lattice creeping its way across your kitchen.

Glass splashbacks will set you back more than a regular splashback but you are getting what you pay for. They use a “toughened” glass that will ward off heat and breakages. So you are not simply paying for something that looks pretty, you are actually purchasing a very high quality splashback. The second reason it cost more is that unlike normal glass this glass is totally clear (normal glass has a slight green tinge) so not as to affect the colour you are choosing for it. This is also known as “Starfire” glass.
